We Built P1 for the AI Era of the Web. The Beta is Now Open.

| 4 min read

I don’t think anyone in this industry needs convincing that AI has changed the web. The question is what we do next.

We are facing three seismic changes at once: search, security, and the fact that code is suddenly abundant. People are now asking machines to research, compare, summarize, and make decisions. No way are we going back to traditional search on Google. On the flip side, do we trust what we see? It’s never been easier to fake a website or create a lookalike login page. The web has always been a fundamentally hostile security environment, but now it’s dialed up to alien invasion levels of hostility. Finally, the way we build websites has changed. With more people and more agents contributing to the work, the software-building landscape has completely shifted.

This is not a future scenario or one that’s too fluid to understand. These things have happened. There’s no going back. These changes define the environment we all work in now.

At GoLive, our first user conference, we unveiled P1, Pantheon’s AI-native web composition layer: a governed way for people and AI to create and evolve web experiences on our platform.

It felt like the right place to do it: with the practitioners, customers, and partners who have helped us understand what the web needs next. We are introducing a different way to work.

First reactions were humbling. Following the demo, Joshua Northcott, CTO and Co-founder at Hounder, said:

“Primarily, speed to delivery is going to be a key element to P1. That's going to just transform what we do. Imagine what used to take us six months can now take us two months. To be able to get something out the door that much quicker is a game changer for our clients and us.”

Let’s dig into this more.

The New Gap is Between Creation and Confidence

When we started Pantheon, we kept running into a gap: the gap between what an amazing open source community releases and what it takes to deliver a finished product at scale.

We felt that gap personally. Work got lost. People stepped on each other’s toes. Timelines slipped. Websites crashed. It did not have to be that way, so we built Pantheon to close it—to make the web more reliable, useful, scalable, and secure for the people doing the work.

AI changes the shape of that problem, but not the underlying need.

AI makes it dramatically easier to create, which is wonderful. But the hard part is still hard: ensuring what gets created is on brand, accessible, secure, performant, maintainable, and ready for production, especially when many people, teams, and agents are working at once.

That is the gap P1 is designed to close. That’s why the slogan for the conference was “beyond the vibe.”

Speed without control is a liability

Most teams are being pushed toward an impossible choice:

  • Move fast and accept chaos.
  • Stay in control and become the bottleneck.

I don’t accept that tradeoff. Not for websites that matter.

We need a different operating model, one where people and AI can work as peers on a team, with common context, governed components, with standards and a review process built into the system rather than bolted on afterward.

That is why we built P1.

GoLive reactions made that concrete. Leena Flood, Lead Software Engineer at Biltmore, America’s largest private home and major tourist destination, described P1 as “a robust and reusable library that follows the design system that you define.”

“P1 provides that flexibility for marketers and also gives the ease of mind for the developer team that there are reasonable guardrails, but also the creative freedom that people crave.”

The feedback was positive from our partner agencies, too. With P1, agencies can spend less time on production friction and more time on innovation, judgment, and customer value.

“If you’re building a Next.js website right now, you’re already able to build on P1. It's not out to replace any one technology. I could see a site easily built on P1 that’s bringing in data from Drupal, that’s using Shopify for e-commerce, that’s pulling data from wherever, altogether. P1 is just one of those data stores. It just happens to be really, really well built and connected with AI in a way that we can just innovate super fast.”

– Chris Teitzel, Founder and CEO of Cellar Door

P1 is Pantheon’s AI-native web composition layer. In plain language, it is an AI harness for creating and governing web experiences on top of the Pantheon platform.

It is not a replacement for WordPress, Drupal, Next.js, or the systems and investments that already work for you. It is an additional way to build and evolve the web: with shared context, governed components, collaboration, permissions, review, and a reliable path to production.

The details matter, and there is much more to show. But the central idea is simple: AI should remove toil—not remove accountability.

Why We’re Opening the Beta

We could wait until every edge is polished. That would miss the point.

P1 is about how professional web teams will work in the AI era. We want to build that future with the people who have to make it real: marketers, developers, agencies, digital leaders, and the teams responsible for keeping important sites trustworthy over time.

So we are opening a limited, paid beta for qualified customers and partners who want to work with us early, use P1 in real scenarios, and help shape what comes next.

This is not a generic software trial. It is a hands-on program to learn what it takes to move from brief to production-ready change.

The beta is not the finished product. Its purpose is to put the work in practitioners’ hands, listen closely, and improve it together.

Join the P1 Beta

If you are wrestling with the tension between AI-era speed and the control your organization requires, I would like to hear from you.

Register your interest in the P1 beta.

Joining the waitlist starts a review; it is not automatic acceptance into the program. The P1 team will follow up with selected customers and partners about fit and next steps.

We built Pantheon by listening to the people who make the web. P1 is no different.

The web has changed. The work has changed. Waiting is not a strategy. Let’s build what comes next: fast, carefully, and together.

FAQs

What is P1?

P1 is Pantheon’s AI-native web composition layer for creating and governing web experiences with people, AI, shared context, approved components, collaboration, and review.

Is P1 a replacement for WordPress, Drupal, or Next.js?

No. P1 is an additional creation and governance path on the Pantheon Platform. It is built on the core platform. P1 front-ends run on Next.js, and can pull content from existing WordPress and Drupal sites, or any other content source with an API.

How can I join the P1 beta?

Qualified customers and partners can register interest in the limited paid beta. Joining the waitlist starts a review and does not guarantee acceptance.
