Today, I’m pleased to announce that Pantheon is joining the Drupal AI initiative as a Gold member, delivering first-class support for Google’s Gemini model and other AI/LLM tooling. As a Premier Google Cloud Partner, we bring together Open Source CMS with the web’s most powerful artificial intelligence models.

We will be demonstrating these capabilities at DrupalCon Vienna next week, both at our booth and in our presentation. For anyone attending, get in touch to talk with us at the event.

Start Your Drupal AI Journey with Gemini, Risk-Free

Gemini is the only model family top-ranked in natural language text tasks, image processing, and code generation. That means you can use one backend for a variety of tasks, all with affordable and predictable pricing.

What’s more, because of our partnership with Google Cloud Platform, we can enable you to start your Drupal AI Journey with a bundle of free credits as part of moving to Pantheon. This enables you to leverage Gemini in a private context, without your data being used for training. Pantheon already lets you deliver more ROI from Drupal investment, and now adds the freedom to develop and experiment towards your specific AI goals, risk-free.

In addition to offering first-class support for Gemini and a cloud credit bundle, we are also investing in core Drupal AI capabilities, as well as specific use cases where we see the potential for widespread benefit.

Magic Search adds AI overviews

Our sponsorship of this initiative is grounded in delivering usable end-to-end AI capabilities, the first of which is called Magic Search. This enables any Drupal website to easily add a generative overview capability on top of its existing content search. This can significantly enhance a site’s ability to satisfy visitor intent with a search query, covering for gaps in exact keyword match content.

As the primary mode of web visitor discovery moves from “search” to “ask,” the ability to parse queries via LLM and deliver on-target results based on a vector-based search backend provides a differentiated end-user experience. With Magic Search, anyone using Drupal can quickly upgrade their site to satisfy this growing expectation.

Meeting visitors where they are by satisfying their search queries based on intent has never been easier. Magic Search is under active development; contact us today to learn more about how you can get involved, shape the direction of the project, and upgrade your site.

Tool API unlocking agentic CMS workflows

While Drupal’s longstanding capabilities for managing complex content models with rich taxonomies and relationships make it a great source for feeding LLMs, unlocking the full potential of agentic workflows demands a well-defined set of tools exposed via MCP. The goal is to enable agents to safely and accurately assist with site management, content development, and other workflows.

The Tool API module fills this gap by providing both the framework for defining agentic actions and a ready-made library for common CMS administrative actions. By giving agents a structured and bounded set of tools, this lays a foundation for a future of agentic CMS operations.

In this demo, Mike is showing how you could set up a Drupal instance to massively accelerate a complex content task like producing release notes. This is just one of literally hundreds of ways that this capability can make Drupal a key part of production workflows, even in cases where the ultimate output might be elsewhere:

With Tool API, Drupal becomes an Agentic CMS powerhouse, enabling real-world use cases that go far beyond basic content generation. As organizations increasingly seek ways to streamline using AI, this positions Drupal as a go-to solution in website maintenance and larger content operations.

About the Drupal AI Initiative

The Drupal AI Initiative builds upon powerful structured content and modular functionality to enable the next generation of website operations. By providing robust open-source capabilities built around a strong philosophical framework for responsible AI adoption, Drupal is well positioned to make the most of AI. We believe that this initiative enables Drupal to become a highly efficient solution for digital experience delivery and discovery.

The Initiative’s strategic principles are:

  • AI-Human Partnership: Technology that makes people more capable, not less relevant.
  • Comprehensive Trust Infrastructure: Advanced governance framework with approval workflows, audit trails, and compliance tools for responsible AI management.
  • True Freedom of Choice: Use any AI provider without vendor lock-in.
  • Community-Driven Innovation: Development guided by real-world needs, not corporate roadmaps.

The consortium of supporting organizations backing this initiative is growing daily, and the combined resources of this initiative have already delivered significant advances. We are proud to support this initiative to broadly push forward the goal of AI in Drupal, as well as ensuring that the Google suite of AI tools has first-rate support within this ecosystem.

If you’re in attendance at DrupalCon Europe, get an in-person demonstration. If you’re not planning to be in Vienna, reach out to talk to an expert any time.
