Make Your Mark on the Open Web With the Gift of Open Source

Here at Pantheon, we’re hosting the second annual Gift of Open Source, which inspires our community of developers and non-technical folks alike — to contribute to the open source projects that have graciously given so much to the open web. Dive in to learn more.

At Pantheon, we deeply appreciate all of the work that’s gone into the Open Web, seeing its critical role in solving the myriad of challenges facing the world today.

That’s why we’re encouraging our community of both technical and non-technical folks alike — to contribute to the open source projects that have made the world a better place, for our second annual Gift of Open Source running throughout the entire month of December. The event’s ultimate goal is to provide resources and mentorship to engage and energize first-time contributors to give back to the open source community.

How Can I Enter, to Make Impact on the Open Web?

We want to be very clear that everyone is welcome to participate in the Gift of Open Source — both code and non-code submissions will be accepted! 

There are a ton of ways you can give back to the open source community and enter the Gift of Open Source, including contributing to: 

• Drupal 

• WordPress 

• Open source projects on GitHub

• Pantheon’s projects on GitHub 

If you’re unsure of how to contribute to open source projects and communities, here are some helpful guides:

• Open source projects for first-timers 

As previously mentioned, these contributions don’t have to necessarily be code! They can be as simple as participating in a meeting or giving back to initiatives like Drupal Diversity and Inclusion. Documenting that you attended a meeting for one of these groups is enough for a single contribution to the Gift of Open Source.

Submitting Proof of Participation

To submit your proof of participation, we first ask that you please join the Pantheon Community forum, along with our Community Slack channel #gift-of-open-source, before submitting links/screenshots documenting your submission, along with one to two sentences explaining what you did to give back to the open source community by Dec. 31st.

Maintainers Wanted!

Open call for maintainers — if you're a maintainer of an open source project that could use contributions, we'd love for you to be a part of the Gift of Open Source! We are looking for projects that have open issues for documentation, code, testing, or project management. If you’re interested in including your project in our suggested list, please email Community@Pantheon.io.

Give Back and Win Cool Prizes

Once you’ve joined the Pantheon Community and entered your contributions to open source projects in the month of December, you’ll get the opportunity to win cool swag and fun prizes.  

This year, we’re kicking off this event with a 12 Days of Giving campaign, where we’ll select one lucky winner (at random) to receive an awesome tech gadget worth $100! If you’re one of the lucky winners, you’ll receive a Twitter DM from someone on our team with the next steps to receive your prize. We’ll be announcing these winners daily on Twitter. 

Additionally, the first 300 people to register to the Gift of Open Source and submit two contributions following the rules above score a limited-edition t-shirt, and all other qualified entries will receive a swag bag of assorted goodies! 

Just remember, entries are only allowed during the month of December but early-bird registration starts on November 5th, so hurry up to secure your shot at the limited-edition t-shirt. 

But Wait, There’s More Giving In Store ...

For each contribution up to 500 contributions made, Pantheon will donate $20 to the Drupal Association and WordPress Foundation, for a total potential of $5,000 to each organization to support their efforts.
