Fix Your Content Workflow: Content Publisher Now in Public Preview
This blog post was built using Google Docs and Pantheon Content Publisher.
Last month we went on a family trip. Getting to our destination required connecting flights, an interminable layover, and a rental car nightmare. You know what would have been easier?
A direct flight.
That’s Content Publisher for Google Docs: a direct flight between where you create, edit, and approve content, Google Docs, and its final destination, your website. No detours, no navigating multiple systems, just live preview and one-click publishing from where content creators are already working every day.
Content Publisher for Google Docs is a web content workflow tool that empowers teams to directly publish content from Google Docs to their Wordpress, Drupal, Next.js websites, and beyond.
Last November, we announced the private beta for Content Publisher. Today, we're excited to announce that Public Preview has landed: starting today you can try the enterprise-grade version here free for 30 days.
Content Publisher revolutionizes how content teams and web teams collaborate, while fitting cleanly into your existing rituals. It is a lightweight content workflow tool, not one more system which requires significant implementation and training.
Why We Built Content Publisher for Google Docs
At Pantheon, our vision is to be where the web works, connecting teams and technology to ensure content, code, and delivery operate as one WebOps system. Content Publisher directly includes content and creative teams in this vision, a crucial step forward.
Most teams already draft, review, and approve content in Google Docs. The traditional process of copying and pasting this content into a CMS often introduces errors, delays, and significant training overhead – creating a major bottleneck.
Enter, Content Publisher.
1 - Google Docs-First Authoring Experience and a Streamlined Publishing Workflow
Content Publisher allows over 1 billion active Google Docs users, including content, editorial, and marketing teams, to remain in their familiar Docs environment, with support for images, GIFs, tables, and most popular web styles.
Side-by-side live previews and one-click publishing gives non-technical teams a clear idea of what their work will look like live and control over the publishing process. This removes the manual, error-prone process of copying and pasting content from a document into a CMS, as well as the onus on web teams to train, troubleshoot, and update later.
But never fear: web teams maintain security and governance with approval workflows and advanced permissioning.
The result? Faster publish times, reduced cross-functional friction, increased agility, and greater flexibility, all while upholding high standards for governance and security.
2 - API and AI-First with Modern, Composable Architecture
Content Publisher is a prime example of how modern, composable architecture can transform a specific workflow—in this case, content publishing. It takes the general principles of decoupling, APIs, and microservices and applies them to solve a major pain point for digital teams: the disconnect between content creation and web delivery.
Pantheon Content Publisher currently supports a turnkey integration with Google Docs as a third-party content source, but any content source can be integrated with Content Publisher using Open APIs.
APIs are the critical link in this architecture. They allow Content Publisher to communicate seamlessly with various systems:
- Google Docs Integration: An API connects Google Docs, where writers and editors do their work, to the Pantheon platform. This allows for real-time syncing of content.
- Front-End Integration: Another API delivers the structured content from our headless CMS to the front-end "head." This is where the composable part really shines, as developers can use their preferred modern website solutions like WordPress, Drupal , Next.js, or others to build the user-facing website. The API ensures the content is displayed correctly and quickly, regardless of the front-end technology.
- AI Integration: Pantheon's Content Publisher also leverages APIs to integrate with services like Google's Vertex AI. This allows for dynamic features such as automated content summaries, SEO-enhancing metadata suggestions, and other content enrichments directly within the Google Docs workflow.
This architecture also supports ongoing rapid product development. While we prioritized Google Docs as the most widely-used creative canvas for web content, the roadmap for Content Publisher includes out of the box support for other widely-used sources (e.g. Microsoft365, Notion), as well as connectors for design and layout systems.
3 - AI-Powered Content with More Impact, Less Effort
Here at Pantheon, we don’t just “sprinkle AI on it”—we build AI into our products so it drives real, specific outcomes for our customers.
Pantheon's Content Publisher’s AI features turn it into a content workflow accelerator (with more to come on the roadmap!). It augments the human team by automating tedious tasks, allowing writers and editors to focus on what they do best: creating high-quality, engaging content.
Content Summaries and Metadata Generation: Content Publisher uses AI to analyze the content within a Google Doc and automatically generate concise summaries. It also suggests relevant metadata, such as descriptions and keywords, which are crucial for SEO, GEO, and content discoverability. This feature saves writers and editors significant time and ensures that every piece of content is optimized for the web from the moment it's created.
Enhanced Search and Content Organization, Internally and Externally: Content Publisher uses AI capabilities to improve how content is organized and discovered, helping with the classification of content and the identification of related media or articles, making it easier for editors to build structured content collections and for users to navigate the website.
In late 2025 and 2026, expect to see the ability to define your own RAG and prompt selection, configure which model you want to use (including your own), use an assistant to select relevant images and videos for your content directly in your asset repositories, our MCP server to connect to your agentic infrastructure, and more.
What's Next?
It’s 2025. The technology exists and it’s time to reach your destination–great content on a reliable and high-performing site without all those friction-filled pit stops along the way.
Our customers tell us again and again that we’re core to their site–the most trusted web hosting platform, the best place for multi-site functionality, exceptional stability, and an intuitive interface. But now you can expect more, from model-level customizations for AI to deeper support for optimizing your content in a world where SEO and GEO rules are always changing.
