Log Forwarding in Beta: Delivering Actionable Insights for Customers

| 2 min read

At Pantheon, our vision is to be where the web works. This means providing you with total visibility into your mission-critical applications. When you're managing a complex portfolio of sites, being able to quickly diagnose a performance issue or prove compliance is essential.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that Log Forwarding is now available in beta – you can request access now! This feature is a major milestone, giving our customers direct access to the operational data that matters most.

Three Ways to Put Log Forwarding to Work

Whether you're a developer, security expert, or IT leader, log forwarding provides actionable insights. Here are three powerful use cases for leveraging logs within your organization:

  • Performance Monitoring & Bottleneck Detection: Spotting a slow database query or an overloaded service can be like finding a needle in a haystack. By forwarding your php-slow and nginx-access logs, you can quickly visualize traffic patterns, identify performance bottlenecks, and fine-tune your application to maintain peak performance during high-traffic events.
  • Security Auditing & Intrusion Detection: Meeting regulatory requirements and maintaining a strong security posture demands a complete audit trail. Logs are essential for security auditing & intrusion detection. By analyzing nginx-error and access logs in your centralized security information and event management (SIEM) tool, you can detect anomalous activity and respond to security events in real-time.
  • Debugging and Root Cause Analysis: When an error occurs, every minute counts. Forwarding your php-error and php-fpm-error logs enables your development and operations teams to use advanced search and filtering tools to rapidly pinpoint the root cause of an issue and resolve it quickly, drastically reducing Mean Time To Resolution (MTTR).

What Pantheon Supports Today (and What Logs You Get)

Our initial Beta launch supports the leading enterprise log management providers, allowing for immediate integration with your existing infrastructure:

  • Supported Providers: We currently support forwarding logs to Sumo Logic and Splunk. You can follow our documentation to fetch the endpoint URL.
  • Logs Sent: We are sending key logs, including:
    • php-fpm-error
    • php-slow
    • php-error
    • nginx-access
    • Nginx-error

This new architecture has already been successfully rolled out for early adopters and they love it!

Requesting Additional Providers and Future Plans

We know that enterprise log management is diverse, and we are committed to expanding our ecosystem.

The good news is that more providers are coming soon. If you rely on a provider other than Sumo Logic or Splunk, we want to hear from you! Please reach out to your Customer Success Manager (CSM) or our support team to voice your requirements. Your feedback directly shapes our roadmap for the fastest path to full migration.

Looking ahead, we are planning a future with a full customer-facing dashboard experience and self-service setup of log forwarding via UI, giving you even more control.
